Orthodontics in NYC
Be confident at all times.
Orthodontics is the dentistry field primarily concerned with treating various irregularities of the teeth, such as poor alignment, overbites, occlusions and overcrowded mouths. When these abnormalities occur, they can obstruct the ability to have a proper bite, thereby hindering chewing and leading to sore facial muscles and even migraines. Moreover, crooked teeth can have a strong negative impact on the aesthetics of your smile and facial features. It is not surprising then that nearly 80% of the nation will undergo orthodontic treatment at some point in their life, with the most common ages being from 6 to 18 years old.
Orthodontic treatment is the process of moving and straightening the teeth to improve their alignment, function and overall appearance. The most common method is the use of braces, retainers or Invisalign. As every person is different, no one method works for everyone, and therefore your orthodontist will find the right form of orthodontic treatment for your situation, taking into consideration your needs and wishes. But one thing that all these devices has is common is that they apply continuous pressure to your teeth and mouth. Over time, the teeth will slowly move, and the bone will change shape, causing the teeth to align perfectly, leaving you with a gorgeous smile.
Braces vs Invisalign
We often receive questions on what the advantages, disadvantages and overall differences are between braces and Invisalign. While both are designed to slowly straighten your teeth and fix alignment irregularities, there are some basic fundamental differences between the two. One of which is its appearance. Traditional braces are made of metal brackets that are attached to your teeth – thereby making them visible and non-removable. Modern orthodontics have come a long way, and you can now get brackets in various colors, or even closely match the color of the enamel on your teeth, so that they’re not quite so noticeable. The average time that a patient will need to wear braces before seeing their final desired result is anywhere from 18 months to 3 years.
Invisalign, though, was created to not be visible. They are worn over the teeth and are customized according to X-rays and 3-D images in order to receive a perfect impression of your teeth. Clear aligners are also removable and tend to be more comfortable than traditional braces. The average length of time a patient will need to use clear aligners tends to be much shorter, too, as most will need them anywhere from 6 to 18 months. While this removability option is usually the biggest draw for people, it’s important to note that the success of Invisalign depends greatly on the patient. If you do not wear them as directed by your orthodontist or fail to attend regularly scheduled follow-up appointments, it will dramatically change the success of straightening your teeth.
Both braces and Invisalign are excellent choices for orthodontic treatment, and Dr. Jonathan Levine and his team of dental experts will help determine the right option for you.
