JBL New York City

Meet our specialty team!

Dear Patients,

I’m very excited to share with you the specialty team I’ve assembled at JBL NYC over the last three years. I’m incredibly fortunate to have met this talented group—and I look forward to bringing them to you. Herewith, a bit about them, and a brief q+a about the unique gifts they bring to the practice.

Born in Kuwait and raised in Kuwait City and the New York City area, Dr. Burashed completed his dental degree at Boston University. He pursued his Prosthodontics training at Harvard University and earned a master’s degree in Medical Science. Additionally, he was a research fellow at the Cleft Lip and Palate Program at Boston Children’s Hospital. He also received advanced training in Orthodontics at St. Barnabas Hospital in New York City. Dr. Burashed has been named a Top Dentist by Boston Magazine in 2020 and 2021.

Dr. Koo Min Chee is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and a Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists who specializes in complex reconstructive, implant, and cosmetic procedures. Born in Canada and raised on the Caribbean island of Trinidad, Dr. Koo Min Chee attended the University of Western Ontario in Canada where she graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Medical Sciences. She completed her Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) degree at the University of Pennsylvania and serves as a committee chair on the American College of Prosthodontists.

Dr. Berant earned his Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) degree from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. After working as a general dentist on the west coast for three years, he pursued specialty training at the Periodontics-Orthodontics program at the University of Pennsylvania. During his residency in Philadelphia, Dr. Berant worked closely with leading clinicians in the field of Periodontics, Orthodontics, Prosthodontics, and Endodontics to develop a protocol for Tooth Auto-Transplantation. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontists and a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, American Association of Orthodontics, Academy of Osseointegration, American Dental Association, and the Academy of Sports Dentistry.

What is the most important contribution of your specialty to the Healthy Mouth baseline at the practice?

“Teeth not only need to be free of cavities to be healthy but exist in a health-favorable environment. This means that the teeth should be placed in a healthy position within each jaw and relative to each other. This is where Orthodontics can be a powerful tool to optimize the health of your entire mouth.”

“As a prosthodontist, I would describe myself as the oral architect of the dental team uniquely qualified to restore your smile to achieve optimum esthetics and rid you of dental disease.”

The specialty of “periodontics” (“peri” meaning around and “odons” meaning tooth) is truly the foundation of the entire mouth. Healthy, pink, gums allow us as oral health specialists to ensure that our patients may eat what they want, smile with confidence, and ultimately keep their teeth for life. Our specialty provides us with the skillset to regenerate bone, correct gum recession, and replace missing teeth with implants (which can serve to create a rejuvenated look)., we can rejuvenate the face while restoring a patient’s ability to function optimally.”

What do you hope to accomplish at JBL NYC in the next year?

“We have introduced some exciting changes in the orthodontic services we are offering at J B L NYC that we hope to implement further next year! Not only are we providing custom-made aligner treatments with our JBL Aligners, but we have introduced lingual orthodontics in our practice (braces that are placed behind the teeth).”

“I hope to have a positive impact on the lives of others and give more than what is expected. I will strive to listen not only with my ears, but with my eyes, mind, and heart to truly understand and empathize with others to create a difference. In this way, I can continue to create healthy, beautiful smiles.”

“I hope to have the opportunity to introduce myself to as many patients as possible. My philosophy in dentistry is preventative-oriented in nature. If we can have a conversation with patients, answer any questions they might have, and catch early signs of gum disease, we can prevent the need for more invasive treatment.”
